Male Breast Reduction

Do you feel uncomfortable without a shirt? Are your breasts enlarged, forcing you to cover up?   Do you avoid the beach or swimming pools?   Surgery can help you.  Male breast development, or gynecomastia, is the enlargement of male breast tissue. Gynecomastia surgery removes excess breast tissue and contours the surrounding areas, helping you achieve the look you desire.

If you avoid certain activities because you are afraid to show your chest, gynecomastia correction is worth considering.

About Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia is common, affecting 40 to 60 percent of men.    There may be hormonal causes and development in childhood or teenage years should prompt a workup by the pediatrician to rule out any underlying endocrine abnormality. Some medications and drugs may also be associated with excess male breast tissue development.

While losing weight may help some men, others experience no improvement, as excess glandular breast tissue remains.   This condition is sometimes seen in otherwise very slender males. Gynecomastia surgery, Male Breast Reduction, effectively removes this glandular tissue and restores a more masculine chest appearance.  Patients who have undergone the procedure report improved self-confidence and a return to shirtless environments (i.e. the beach).

The procedure is performed in a surgery center or hospital under general anesthesia or IV sedation.   Patients go home the same day.  There is usually an incision part way around the areola.  The underlying glandular tissue is excised.  Liposuction is then used to contour the surrounding chest.   The skin usually adapts and contours over time, without the need for formal skin excision.   The typical procedure differs from a female breast reduction, and such might only be applied in cases where there has been massive weight loss (such as after gastric bypass) and there is a real need for skin removal and nipple repositioning.

Patients typically experience some degree of soreness and aching, well controlled with oral pain medication during the first few days.  The surgical bandages are changed in about 2 days and a gentle compression garment is applied.  This garment will be used for several weeks, until the tissues are well healed.  Patients may experience decreased sensation in the nipple area and chest skin.  Although usually temporary, more long-standing sensory changes may possibly occur.  Most patients return to work or school after a week.  Some mild bruising may occur.  Swelling usually subsides over a period of a few weeks.
